From science labs to medical writing - Frank's story

Apr 15
Frank Frayne’s path is an inspiring one. A science enthusiast at heart, Frank’s journey started with a passion for pharmacology and cancer biology, but somewhere along the way, Frank realised the laboratory wasn’t the right fit for him. As he humorously puts it, “I’m a bit clumsy, so lab work probably wasn’t for me!”

Frank's story highlights how passion, determination and an openness to exploring different career opportunities, can lead to a meaningful and fulfilling profession. From his academic roots to uncovering his calling in medical writing, his experience is a testament to finding the right career — even through unexpected connections.

From university to MedComm, how Frank made the cut

Frank began his academic journey with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Pharmacology, complete with a year-long placement. He then pursued a master’s degree in Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, allowing him to explore his interest further.

The initial spark for medical writing came unexpectedly during a university careers talk. “It got me thinking about how writing and science could come together.” That spark turned into a flame through an unusual family connection — a barber who cut the hair of someone from Word Monster. This opportunity opened the door to Frank providing freelance support, before fully embarking on his MedComms journey.

Frank’s professional development was further supported by a scholarship opportunity to attend the Monster Academy’s Medical Writing Fundamentals course in Autumn 2023. He reflects on the experience: "It did for me what it says on the tin — helped me grasp the fundamentals of medical writing in a super positive learning environment. Not only that, but I could show off what I’d learnt each week when the homework tasks were set. Getting feedback from experienced medical writers was not only lovely but another mechanism of upskilling in anticipation for my first writer role.”

The draw of medical writing

For Frank, medical writing was the perfect fit — combining storytelling with science. “Once you’re at university, you read a lot of research papers and realise how hard it can be to make complex information accessible. There’s such a gap between the scientific community and the public. I wanted to help bridge that gap.”

Frank’s desire to create better communication drove his career choice, and he hasn’t looked back. Writing allows him to bring clarity to complicated concepts, making medical content approachable and engaging.

Overcoming challenges

The transition to MedComms wasn’t without its hurdles. “It’s hard to pinpoint one big challenge — for me it was lots of smaller ones. Knowing how to get into MedComms, finding the right opportunity, gaining enough experience for an agency to take a chance on me, and timing everything just right.” With resilience and adaptability, Frank navigated the ups and downs, knowing that success in the field depends on more than just individual effort — it’s also about aligning with the needs of the industry.

The road ahead

Fast-forwards to today, and Frank is thriving at Word Monster, turning science into stories that empower and educate. His journey highlights the importance of perseverance, passion, and being open to the unexpected opportunities life throws your way.

Overview of the day

Frank’s mornings begin leisurely, getting up around 7:30 am and enjoying a quiet start to the day, before logging on at 8:30 am. “Sometimes, I know exactly what my day looks like; other times, I figure it out as I go.” His tasks vary widely from client work, creating impactful content, to attending team meetings or participating in internal training. These training sessions are an excellent opportunity to share insights and foster knowledge within the team. By 5:00 pm, the workday ends, and his evenings are his own.

Diverse projects

Frank’s projects are just as varied as his day. He describes working on everything from speaker decks to formulary packs and even pro bono projects, such as creating a guide for a rare disease charity. “It’s rewarding to know that even as a junior writer, I can make an impact.” Fridays are a little different — Frank supports the studio and resourcing team, offering him valuable insight into the operations side of the business.

Finding reward in the work

What keeps Frank motivated? It’s the knowledge that his work makes a difference. “At the end of the day, everything we do is for the patient,” he says. "Whether it’s collaborating with clients or providing pro bono support for charities, the sense of purpose behind this work is deeply fulfilling."

Managing deadlines in MedComms

Balancing multiple deadlines in the fast-paced world of MedComms is no small feat, but Frank emphasises the importance of transparent communication. “Being proactive and realistic with colleagues, clients, and managers is crucial,” he explains. He also appreciates Word Monster’s supportive culture, which helps prevent burnout and ensures a healthy work environment.

Work-life balance at Word Monster

One of the standout benefits of working at Word Monster, according to Frank, is the emphasis on work-life balance. “It’s incredible to have that flexibility. 90% of the time, I’m based in Cardiff, but I also spend the remaining 10% between Devon and Cornwall to be closer to family — something I truly value."
Frank also makes time for hobbies, like playing football twice a week. The ability to balance personal commitments and hobbies with professional responsibilities is a key perk of life at Word Monster.

Personal and professional growth

Professionally and personally, Frank has grown immensely since joining Word Monster. From improving his writing skills to navigating client expectations, he’s gained confidence and a sense of independence. “Even as the most junior person on the writing team, I know I bring something unique to the table.”

Advice for aspiring medical writers

As for aspiring medical writers, Frank’s advice is clear: persevere. “You have to show hunger and determination to get your foot in the door, whether that’s through networking, grad schemes, or training courses like those available at the Monster Academy.” The effort pays off, and the rewarding work speaks for itself.
